I need to get this off my chest.
The following is common knowledge...
- My borderline obsession with Polka Dots.
- Sending and receiving postcards makes me happy.
- I developed a love for pickles last Spring. *Yum!
And... I enjoy quotes. Try to post them daily. Use them in my artwork, etc.
I guess it comes from reading. No, I don't read 2-3 books a month, wish I did but I have six books on my nightstand and I read chapters and then I move on to the next book. Some of them are so interesting that I might keep reading for a while, but I never make it to the end. Similar to my previous "relationships", this last one lasted a little over 6 months... and by a little a mean like a few days. More on that later.
So, yeah... affirmations. I'm all about them! I think that people should do whatever it takes to find motivation. Whether its the motivation to start a diet, get a new job, go back to school, leave a relationship, boost their confidence, etc. But seriously, some people just overdose on quotes and daily affirmations. I know a few!!! And for the record, saying you're happy is not the same as being happy.
"Hey Jenn, Are you happy!?" seems to be the question of the day whenever I hang out with some of my friends. And then I start thinking... "Well, I was happy until you asked! wtf, now I remember I have a few deadlines, not enough money to buy all the art supplies I'd love to buy, the fact that most of my best friends are in relationships, and the ones who aren't like YOURSELF walk around talking about the positivity in the universe, how we need to visualize what we want, etc. It's annoying, so thanks for the reminder, you a-hole!!" but instead, I smile and say, of course. Life is good.
Yeah, yeah... I'm not the most emotional girlie girl out there, I can be somewhat "negative" (which by the way I think its an awful and very negative label for someone who is just realistic), but most important of all I'm not fake. And Gawd, why is it that lately I feel that all these people who are walking around jumping, screaming, and pretty much puking "positive energy" are just a bunch of phonies. It really does!
Let's face it. Not everyone is happy 24/7, 365.
And if you said "I am, I wake up every morning and tell myself that its up to me to be happy, blah, blah,blah" then you're full of shit.
I wake up every morning (that is when I go to bed before 5am) and remind myself of how blessed I am and of all the good things in my life. But life isn't perfect and we don't get it our way all the time. So, from time to time somewhere during the day or that week... something will come along and act as a reminder of what we're missing. And not just something we're missing, but that something we want and don't have. And it will make us sad. Yes, we will do our best to ignore it and think of all the good, how blessed we are, blah, blah, blah.... it won't away.
So, go ahead and walk around puking positive energy, but don't expect others to do the same. Be respectful and let people deal with their "problems" how ever they feel like it, as long as they're not hurting anyone. We all deal with things different.

Today I had a thought, what if I don't wake up tomorrow.

I know my friends and family would have a hard time and they will miss me so much. I hope Daraun would take care of Picasso, after all its his dog too. I wouldn't be around to see Henry and Rebecca head off to college and make fun of them when they start to date. My mom, well... I can't even imagine how she would fee. I like to think that many others would be sad as well. And then... I think of how they might remember me. I hope they remember my smile, my jokes, daily inspiration.

But then what happens... is that where my story ends? Yes, I will forever be in their heart, but that's as far as it goes. I don't want a CNN documentary or the front page of the Seattle Times. I do however, want people to remember me for what I've done for others. I want to them think of the positive change I brought to my community, to those around me. I want to them smile and tell others how much I cared. I want people to remember me for what I've done. I want to leave something behind. That way, it won't even feel like I'm gone.

So what if I died tomorrow....

I had an amazing childhood. I've met amazing people along the way. One of them was August Wilson. He passed away a few years ago, but sometimes I forget that he's not here with us. Why? Because he left so much behind. Not just a family, not just memories, but his books, his legacy and I want to do the same. I want to leave something meaningful behind me. Not just a family, memories, but something for my community, something that might not change the world, but change others and their future.

My biggest work of art is my life. I'm not quite where I want to be, but far from where I used to be. But deep down, I know I can do more and I want to do more. I didn't do any new years resolutions. I think they're a waste of time. This last trip I took to Chicago wasn't exactly what I thought it would be, but definitely what I needed. There is something about taking a trip and being away from home and your comfort zone that can be life changing.

You see, I'm not the most religious person ever. I believe in God. I've questioned him many times. I got mad and walked away, blamed him for things that happened and had no control over. But I've always known he's there. Ever since my grandmother passed away, I've found myself talking to her. Some might think I'm crazy, but the truth is that when times are tough and I'm confused; I close my eyes and tell her how I feel. It helps. It really does.

So, this last trip was different for reasons I'll just write about later. Not that I don't want to talk about it, but I'm still processing most of what happened. It's a good story. The one thing I can tell you right now is that it made my faith stronger. I've been asking God for a sign, any sign. Just for him to give something for me to work with. I want to get back to my art, do more photography, travel, help others more, but I can't quite do it if I'm dealing with this internal conflict of what I should do, need to do, and want to do. So, I got that sign. Now, all I have to do is take it from there.

I need to take a leap of faith to reach my goals. To make that change I've wanting to make and know that if I die tomorrow, its going to be okay because I've done the most I can to make a difference. Just some of my morning thoughts.

This is a very shocking documentary to say the least. I'm not a very emotional girl, but some scenes made me cringe and shed a few tears. Despite attempts to make the fates of the filmed children seem positive during the final scenes, you won't help but wonder what unimaginable nightmares other children experience while making this nightmarish journey. And although you will feel depressed after watching this movie, I hope you will also feel gratitude for everything you have in life. There are kids who yearn for the basics and risk their lives to get them: a home, food,and someone who loves them. We must count our blessings and cherish them.

Is Honesty The Best Policy!?

You see, I've always been the type of girl who speaks her mind. I will tell you how I feel and what I'm thinking regardless of the outcome. My dad always said that honesty is one of the most important chapters in the book of life. And as many of you know, I live by a lot of the things my parents told me. Only because they've turned me into the woman I am.

Lately, I've been running into issues when it comes to friendship and honesty. It's as if some friends and people in your life love me because of how honest I am when it comes to everything.... but when it comes to them hearing the truth; well, they just can't handle it. I've found that total honesty from friends is not only refreshing but welcome. The fact that someone can tell me the truth no matter how brutal means they care about me. The trick here is to find people who won't abuse that privilege. That means they don't make careless statements like -- "you need a nose job" But they do tell me things like "you're rushing your relationship. Step back and take a break."

I want people to be honest with me, especially my friends. I'm starting to realize a few people in my life are just too sensitive and I will have to sugar coat everything from now on. It's not easy because, well that's not the way it should be. Life is harsh! It's not horrible, but not everything comes our way inside the perfect package with warning labels. We have to be ready to take on everything. Good, bad, silly, harsh, etc. And now, I find wondering... is honesty the best policy!?

One thing you have to know about me is that I don't like to have a conversation on a subject, unless I know some facts on it. I prefer to listen to the person who knows and then I will be able to use that knowledge in a future conversation. I also love to learn a little bit about everything, so I have at least one fact or question about the subject. I don't like to give an opinion based on feelings. Some find that a problem, but I really enjoy that.

I guess one of my goals for this year, should be to try to take people's feelings in consideration a little more and not just tell them what I think. It's just so hard because I have a problem when those close to me pretend to be someone they're not or to know about a subject they really don't. I'll revise this topic later. Perhaps on an open letter to my future daughter regarding honesty, friendships, and growing up.

I admit it! We all lie from time to time. And whoever says I never lie... well, totally lying!! When it comes to friendship and family, we tend to keep certain details to ourselves instead of sharing the entire story. Not because we don't want to talk about it, but because sometimes those details don't make sense to us and we rather review them with our own eyes than through the eyes of someone else. It's simple! I don't expect my family or friends to tell me everything.... and honestly, there are many things I keep to myself. But the truth is we have to learn to accept each other for who we are. Especially when it comes to friends. We all have different personalities and won't always agree on everything we say. But that is why we became friends in the first place. It would be boring to have the same personality in a group of friends. I know, I couldn't do that.

I have my best friends, those I'm close to and those I just enjoy talking to from time to time. I've always been the girl who moves in different circles. I know many people who say that, but honestly they don't. More on that later. I guess, what I'm trying to say is that I need to learn to sugar coat my honesty and adapt to the personalities of the friends I love. After all... that's what friends do. I rather be the friend who tells you that skirt is the ugliest one I've ever seen and you should never wear it.... but, perhaps I should learn to customize my honesty and say something more along the lines of that's not the most flattering skirt you own. We'll see!

The great moments of your life won't necessarily be the things you do, they'll also be the things that happen to you. Now, I'm not saying you can't take action to affect the outcome of your life, you have to take action, and you will. But never forget that on any day, you can step out the front door and your whole life can change forever. You see, the universe has a plan kids, and that plan is always in motion. A butterfly flaps its wings, and it starts to rain. It's a scary thought but it's also kind of wonderful. All these little parts of the machine constantly working, making sure that you end up exactly where you're supposed to be, exactly when you're supposed to be there. The right place at the right time.

AquaFacts: 1. The only sea otters near Vancouver are the three living at the Vancouver Aquarium. 2. Sea otters have one of the thickest fur coats in the animal kingdom. 3. Did you know oil spills are the greatest threat to sea otters? Sea otter fur loses its buoyancy and insulating capacity when covered with oil. This leads to hypothermia and pneumonia. When sea otters groom and clean their oiled fur, they ingest and inhale oil. This has detrimental effects on their liver, kidneys and lungs.

Life is a roller coaster!! I love the ups and downs, twists and turns.... but sometimes I get a little dizzy and tend to forget what I need to focus on. So, what better way to say goodbye to the old year and hello to the new one than taking a few hours out of my day to re-build my photography website. It was fun to re-direct the domain to this blog for a while, but all fun has to come to an end. Except this time, the fun ends here and begins somewhere else. I'm excited for the upcoming photography projects and everything else 2012 is bringing my way. So, happy new years eve everyone!! I can proudly say I'm ending the year, feeling accomplished!!
